The Importance Of Dealing With Grief & Loss
When facing the loss of a relative or a loved one, we must start by accepting and acknowledging that we grieve because we appreciated them. It’s a personal and lonely journey, especially when presented under unforeseeable circumstances.
In this blog post, we will go through what grief & loss are, the stages you will go through, and why grieving is so important.
What’s Grief And What Are Its Stages?
Grief is the process of learning to live without the ones we’ve lost. Instead of one emotion or state, the grief process is better understood through “The 5 Stages of Grief.”
Denial
During the first stage, we try to carry on as if nothing has happened. Numbness is frequent in the days following bereavement.
Anger
Death can seem cruel and unfair. Especially when you feel someone has died prematurely. It’s also typical to feel angry towards the person that passed away, or even at ourselves for what we didn’t say or do before they died.
Bargaining
It’s difficult to accept that there’s nothing we can do to change circumstances while we’re in pain. Bargaining occurs when we begin to form agreements with ourselves or, if we’re religious, with God. We want to think that we’ll feel better if we do certain things.
Depression
When we think about grief, we also often think of sadness and longing. Usually, the most challenging stage of grief is depression. By allowing ourselves to feel the sadness, we reach a crucial stage of grief: acceptance.
Acceptance
Grief comes in waves, and it often feels like nothing will ever be the same again. Most of us will discover that the pain eases, and it’s possible to accept what happened. We may never truly “get over” the loss of a loved one, but we may learn to live anew.
Why Is It Important To Grief?
Nothing guarantees that our grieving process will go exactly in this order. Although, it’s essential to take the time to process this experience and the emotions that come along with it. Unprocessed emotions may lead to more significant inconvenience and challenges, preventing us from being present for those still around us.
